Who, actually, stands in the way of accountability?

Who, actually, stands in the way of accountability?

Helplessness shown by Shahzad Akbar, advisor to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan in holding Sharif family accountable has raised concern that there is no justification of holding his office if he has been made so helpless.
Like his previous press conference, Shahzad Akbar, advisor to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan targeted Shahbaz Sharif charging him with corruption of billions of rupees in a recently held press conference. The first hour of his press conference gave impression broad net of Sharif family front companies has been seized. Shahzad Akbar gave impression that record of 460 million transactions in the account of Front Company of Nisar trading owned by Rashid Karamat Masih, a small employee of Sharif family has become available. Cross cheques which were issued by PML-N leaders to Hamza Shahbaz in the name of party funds have been recovered from accounts of front companies.
Shahzad stated money laundering has been done in the guise of party funds.. Therefore, this case can be referred to Accountability court as well as election commission.
But all of sudden Shahzad Akbar paused. He started saying that here he is being impeded in doing his job.
He in a state of desperate frustration added that “may he not hold them accountable and may his government not hold them accountable. Therefore, it is then duty of media to keep on raising voice for accountability process. If some other government comes after it then it is obligation of media not to allow it to go for give and take.
During 30 minutes of his press conference he gave impression that Shahbaz Sharif’s accountability is in the offing. On the 31st minute he came up with a different impression that the accountability of Sharif family is not certain during PTI regime.
He told the media men in details that money laundering was being done through fake front companies of poor employees of Shahbaz Sharif and his children after 2007. He mentioned names of 10 fake companies adding that money amounting to Rs 17 billion was laundered through these companies. Shahzad Akbar mentioned the name of employees of Sharif family along with the name of front companies which were being run by them. How much money has been received in his fake company? The name of contractors and the total amount deposited by them in these accounts along with the dates of depositing amount were also disclosed. Shahzad Akbar mentioned that how much money was drawn by Sharif family members from front accounts and later was deposited in their accounts. He also knew the names of party leaders who gave cross cheques in the name of party fund which were recovered from Sharif family personal accounts.
Despite having such details on involvement of Sharif family in money laundering why Shahzad Akbar has expressed disappointment that his party may not be able to hold Sharif family accountable.
This helplessness on the part of Shahzad Akbar has raised certain questions. First he should inform about the impediments on the way to accountability. He should also mention the names of those who are blocking the way of accountability. If system is hampering the way to accountability then what steps have been taken by his government in improving the system? How many references have been filed against Shahbaz Sharif in the light of the questions raised by him during his previous conference? The replies to these answers are also held by him. Are the evidence held by him against Shahbaz Sharif are insufficient to prove him guilty.
If Shahzad Akbar has not sufficient evidence to prove any one guilty, then why he indulges in mudslinging campaign on TV against individuals not yet proved guilty? If he has enough evidence then why he does not put Shahbaz Sharif to trial for his conviction. Why it seems to him his party will fail in holding Sharif family accountable and this mission will have to be continued by media after their party exit.
What had happened with the matter of Rs 700 billion lying in off shore accounts. This amount was to be brought back to Pakistan by you. What happened about Hassan, Hussain Nawaz and Ishaq Dar who were to be brought back to Pakistan? Has system paralyzed him, Have some compulsions come on the way to accountability and he has failed to hold them accountable besides making recoveries from them due to them despite his hectic efforts.
The last question is this if he cannot do his job then why he is sticking to it. Let someone else do it.

Agriculture sector shows resilience

Agriculture sector shows resilience

The ominous impact of corona virus brought the industrial, business and services sector to stand still. The agriculture sector came in aid to the poor and it saved them from starving to death with yielding produce of 2.50 tons of bumper crops of wheat.
This is not the first time that agriculture sector salvaged Pakistan from corona virus but it has played the role of savior on many occasions for pulling the national economy out of quagmire in the past. In 1951-52 country’s GDP reduced to zero as a super flood had caused devastation in the country in summer season. Except this year Pakistan national economy continued to move to higher growth trajectory. After 70 years Corona has raised alarm that country’s GDP may reduce to zero level by the end of June. The government circles have also said that national economy can shrink from 1 to 1.5 percent during the current fiscal year. However economic wizards have said GDP will not reduce to zero level. However it will decline to the lowest ebb equal to half and third fourth of its ratio. If it happens so it will be due to our robust agriculture sector. Only our agriculture sector has grown by 3 to 4 percent in this hard time amid corona virus spread. This is positive sign for our national economy.
The agriculture sector accounts for 20 percent of GDP. Livelihood of 40 percent population of the country is associated with this sector. It caters to our food needs largely. People use 3 lac tons rice as food per year while our farmers cultivate 7.50 lac tons rice every year. The surplus production of rice is exported to other countries.
Agriculture sector plays key role in promoting and sustaining cattle farming. Our Gawalas get 26 billion ton milk from buffalos and cows every year. Our cattle produce milk far less than the developed countries. If government patronizes this sector, the milk production can increase two to three folds. Cattle farming can yield production at par with developing countries if government provides cows and buffaloes of fine breed at subsidized prices and impart training to farmers to groom the cattle.
Pakistan imports 100,000 ton palm oil from Malaysia every year. We spend about 3.5 billion dollars on importing edible oil every year. Canola and sunflower can be cultivated easily in Pakistan. The farmers don’t grow these crops for want of proper arrangements to purchase these crops. If government fixes support price of these crops like wheat and directs PASCO and provincial agriculture departments to purchase these crops from farmers then the country can become self sufficient in these crops. This way foreign exchange can also be saved.
Pakistan imports pulses valuing more than 100 billion rupees every year. This crop can also be cultivated in the country if the farming community is assured that their crop will be purchased at appropriate rate by the government. We are focusing on cultivating rice and sugarcane crops at present. These crops consume water in bulk. Government should restrict the cultivation of these crops and provide incentive to the farming community to grow pulses and edible oil crop.
The agriculture sector is a neglected sector since long and is not providing yield to its full potential being not on the scanner of the government. The cotton crop has declined by 30 to 35 lac bales than registering rise since the last over 15 years. The main reason behind the low production is shortage of funds and experts in research centers. The agriculture sector cannot develop unless new varieties of seeds are developed. Industrial sector has suffered heavily due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Its growth has dropped by 6 percent. Our exports declined. The inflow of home remittances from overseas Pakistanis remained low with decrease of 2 billion dollars. Tax recovery ratio will also remain low. The next fiscal year will pose a big challenge to government. But the agriculture sector has resilience to extricate the country from this challenging situation successfully.

Time to change narrative on Kashmir

Time to change narrative on Kashmir

Might and power is an accepted norm in the world to settle disputes rather than dialogue as the latter is construed as weakness and the former is the order of the day.
This doctrine is not only prevalent in the domains of world diplomacy but it is fully in place in UN where the disputes are not settled on merit but any decision from this world organization tilts towards the side where Might is right reigns.
Settlement of controversial issues through peaceful dialogue has lost their meaning in the world of today. The talks are held or pursued at the terms of the winner and loser has to lose more.
US and its allies launched military offensive in Afghanistan. In Afghan war, Afghan people and US troops and allied forces paid higher human and economic cost. Former President General Pervez Musharraf advised US to hold negotiations with Pakistan and Afghan Taliban but his pleas were treated as voice in the wilderness and no heed was paid to it. Because US and its allies were obsessed with conceit they will succeed in bringing a favorable result in Afghan war.
What happened was contrary to the desires of US and its allied forces. The armed struggle of Taliban forced US and its allied forces to come to negotiation table and sign peace deal with the force that it had declared terrorist outfit. Trillions of dollars and loss OF thousands of its troops in Afghan war could not yield favorable result. Taliban is perpetuating the policy of keeping the enemy under pressure. It was armed struggle on the part of Taliban that they did not allow the US and its allied forces to win the war despite mammoth financial resources and military might.
US and its allied countries imposed unilateral war in Syrian, Libya and Iraq in Middle East. The US succeeded in achieving its desired results in these countries. The governments in Iraq and Libya were changed. These countries were drifted into civil war. The leadership of these countries was assassinated.
Owing to use of ruthless force by US, not only this super power struck victory but also the world countries and UN could not come forward to broker any peaceful settlement. The world wide public outcry and international norms were trampled mercilessly.
Palestine issue is also victim of the doctrine of Might is right. Under what laws Israel is displacing Palestinians from their homeland. All the countries are paying mere lip service in this humanitarian issue and are only issuing statements rather than taking any collective move to stop Israel from its brutalities.
The talks held after the first and second world wars were meant to safeguard the interests of big powers.
We are confronting the same situation in Kashmir issue. Our leadership is paying only lip service. Pakistan is appealing to the world community and UN to resolve Kashmir conundrum since the last 72 years. But our pleas and appeals don’t assail the ears of world countries and India.
Our leadership is living under delusive hopes. It thinks that a scenario of talks will emerge on its own. Talks will take place between Pakistan and India. Pakistan delegation will tell Indian delegation that as per spirit of partition of sub continent, the areas of Muslims majority were to be annexed with Pakistan. Kashmir issue is to be settled by granting right to self determination to Kashmiris as per UN resolution. The Indian will be convinced to grant right to self determination to Kashmiris.
Pakistan takes a weak position by repeatedly issues statements that people of Kashmir should be given right to self determination and Kashmir issue has to be resolved through dialogue. This gives message to our friendly countries and foes that we have to do nothing more than paying lip service.
This unrealistic narrative of Pakistani leadership encouraged Indian leadership to revoke the symbolic internal autonomy of Occupied Kashmir and annex it with India through use of force.
In these adverse circumstances unarmed Kashmiris are continuing their struggle for the independence of Kashmir alone. They are countering Indian army offensives with sticks, stones and demonstrations. But how long can their struggle continue in the face of brutalities, atrocities and repressive policies of Modi government.
Kashmiris will turn into minority on their own land if no action is taken by Pakistan to counter repressive acts of Indian government.
Pakistan apologetic attitude on settlement of Kashmir issue through dialogue besides ruling out possibility of war on Kashmir issue has left not only Kashmiris at the mercy of Indian troops but will also invite India to cross red lines one by one.

Relatable fear

Tehzeeb Hasnain

As many as 3000 innocent people were killed two decades back when two airplanes crashed into the world trade centre on 11 September 2001. Millions around the world witnessed the event live on televisions. The international community was shocked and was biting its nails with disquiet, as nothing in the history of such precedent ever happened.
Whatever the damage was done through such attacks, the reaction from international community was itself unprecedented. As fear was too immense, quite similar to the Corona fear, the mighty USA will all its powerful allies with a full swing got into the war with insurgents i.e. Taliban, and Al-Qaeda militants, as latter were being given shelter by the former. Few months back, in China, an economic giant, a mysterious disease known as COVID-19, reported to have been originated from a vet market, which is a matter of 2-3 months, overwhelmed the entire world. Almost every country in the international system rushed anxiously to adopt precautionary measures in a bid to halt the further spread of the mysterious diseases which has claimed approximately 0.3m precious lives along with infecting 4.4 million people all across the world. These two tragic events have been analyzed by many in different ways but one factor in both the tragedies is quite common. If one looks meticulously, there is unmatched, unparalleled fear among the general masses who probably would have been celebrating about the shiny future few months back, but who would have thought, the entire world would come to such a halt. Powerful allies seemed to be quite hopeful that dealing with such frantic militants with massive crushing force as flanked by everyone, would bear fruit. However, the initial success such as the initial killing of Mohammad Atef, a close associate of Usama bin Ladin, involved in 9/11, the arrest of Anas al Liby , involved in Kenya embassy bombing, killing of Sinan Al Harethi , involved in USS Cole attack in Lebanese waters, proved short-lived.
New series of hideous attacks such as Madrid train bombing in 2004, attack in Bali, Malaysia once again shook the entire world by casting gruesome sights hinted at the revamping of the terrorist networks. In the wake of such attacks, researchers reported a wide range of mental and physical health outcomes among the masses creating fear; a fear of getting caught up by a terrorist attack anywhere at any time, a fear of losing property, a fear of losing one’s family, a fear of getting financially bankrupt by losing the job as 150,000 people in the US lost their job after 9/11. However, these fears were compounded by the fear of the economic impact of those terrorist attacks as the US had to bear $50 billion to $100 billion in economic cost. All of these fears relatable to some extent to the fears causing due to the outbreak of the contagious virus, SAR-COV-2.
Rarely has the threat of disease occupied so much of our thinking except the threat of terrorism, I guess! For months, almost every newspaper has stories about the coronavirus pandemic on its front page; radio and TV programs have back-to-back coverage on the latest death tolls; social media platforms are filled with frightening statistics, practical advice or gallows humor. It seems like no one is going to come out too early from the fears causing due to Corona pandemic such as fear of unexpected death, fear of losing property, fear of losing loved ones, and fear of losing jobs.
Approximately 30 million Americans have already applied for unemployment benefits, quite a high number though. Germany’s economy has already shrunk by 2.2% in the first three months of this year as the coronavirus pandemic pushed it into recession. Governments worldwide have diverted their financial capital to better fight pandemic but the threat or one may attribute it to the fear of economic recession still looming large.
Investors fear that the spread of the Coronavirus will destroy economic growth and that the government action may not be enough to stop the cruel decline. In response, central banks in many countries, including the United Kingdom, slashed interest rates to make borrowing cheaper and encourage spending to boost the economy. But some analysts have warned that the situation could last longer than anticipated until the pandemic is contained.
Alas! WHO has raised alarms that the deadly Coronavirus could mix up with other viruses and could become another epidemic virus.
Neither were we scared from terrorism, nor are we scared now… and this will have long term consequences, as the high price we had to pay for not standing up to the challenge of extremism in time.

Decency in social discourse

Decency in social discourse

The menace of intolerance has enveloped our society to alarming proportion and no field of life including religion, politics, social environment and literary debates is exception to it. Intolerance starts from abusing in our society. Abusing serves as stepping stone. Extremely obscene language is hall mark of our style of abusing. The obnoxious and naked abusing has replaced it as culture of intolerance has rendered mild abusing a prohibited zone for all. Words mean and cheap and look alike words have no more remained component part of abusing but abusing is meant as naked abusing. Hurling naked abuses has become an accepted norm so much so that a reaction to the view points of those opposed to your view point is shown by unleashing spate of abuses. Mild abusive language has become obsolete and past norm. People are attuned to responding to opponent stance in the form of hurling abuses even on serious topics concerning the national interests. The level of moral degradation has bogged down to deep down the bottoms of shamefacedness. In response to any column on some topic in magazine or news paper no need is felt to write a column and only the weapon of hurling abuses is used to blunt the arguments from the writer. Using simple abusive language will keep you tense as to why you have not used filthy language to silence the writer.Unfortunately our young generation which has to hold the reins of the country is using this weapon relentlessly. Social media comments sections bears ample testimony to it. They are overflowing with the filth and froth of abusive language.
The remarks used by the youths are full of mud –slinging and naked abuses for family members of the opponent. Even mother and sister of others are not spared. The weapon of abusing is not only used by the youths but the elders take initiatives. Political parties and politicians are using this weapon through their social media cells. The job is done through an account which is opened in social media. Opening accounts has now shaped into a business.
The politicians use a filthy word for rivals in their press conference and direct their disciples and party workers to follow him and use this word in twitter. This opens the flood gate of foul mouthed twitters. Every night twitter trends full of abusive language come into being and the politicians spearhead these trends to target their rival parties and leaders. Face book page of any channel tells also this story that when the press conference of any political party is live cast, youth from rival party react in hurling abuses. What a shame that abusive language brings consolation to them and they think to have undergone catharsis process. They think this way they are harming their political rivals and harvesting political mileage. The society has accepted this way of maligning rivals as political tradition of the country and a part of politics. Abusing is no end to intolerance. When mode of abusing loses its impact then we resort to quarrels, spats and raising the fists against each other. We use arms and kill our family or political rivals in gun fire. People are lifted from their homes.
The dead bodies are thrown at some deserted place. Some lucky people among them are set free after having been subjected to intimidation and coercive tactics. On political front cases are reported by political workers that they are facing life threats for exposing the corruption and corrupt practices of corrupt leaders. The other fields are also speaking for how deep the intolerance has taken root therein. Universities have been transformed into hot bed of armed clashes among rival students groups. In courts the rivals are being killed mercilessly in the court room during the hearing of the case. The police stations have turned into torture cells. Loyalty of police officers is being bought to put to torture the people from rival groups. The key to reform this situation lies in incorporating the subject of tolerance, intolerance and logic in the syllabus. Social media should be used as a tool to combat the menace of intolerance.

Protecting doctors, paramedics during pandemic

Protecting doctors, paramedics during pandemic

Non availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and provision of poor quality and lack of training in use of these PPEs by doctors have exposed them and other paramedics to unrelenting blows of Coronavirus epidemic all over the country.
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has raised its voice emphatically against non availability and inadequate provision of PPEs to doctors. PMA has warned that trajectory of Coronavirus will start upward trend fast if PPEs are not provided to the doctors. PMA has said that medics are being provided low-quality, ineffective masks instead of the WHO-mandated N-95 masks,
In Pakistan doctors perform duty for eight hours to attend to corona infected people. Every single day they work on the respiratory ward and they have to enter a bay full of covid-19 positive patients multiple times while they feel unprotected. They have to walk out of the ward every day worrying that they may pass on COVID to other negative patients merely due to the inadequacy of the PPE.
They leave hospital for home after spending 8 hectic hours with the virus patients and on next day they have to come to hospital for performing their duty. During this period of leaving the hospital and returning to hospital again on next day they are not provided PPEs cover. Their own protective measures save them from virus.
On the other hand in Europe, US utmost care is taken of the doctors and paramedics engaged in performing duties at hospitals meant for Coronavirus infected persons. In China following the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic, doctors were sent to the affected city Wuhan from all over China. It was binding on the doctors to perform their duty for seven days in hospital.
After seven days doctors were subjected to corona test and were sent to Quarantine facility for two weeks. They were tested later and if they tested negative then they were allowed to go home to meet their families. European countries and US are also pursuing these SOPs.
We are confronting awkward situation on all fronts ranging from non provision of PPEs to doctors, lack of quarantine and testing facilities to non implementation of precautionary measures in letter and spirit at hospitals.
COVID-19 erupted first of all in Chinese city Wuhan and number of infected persons climbed to millions within a few days. In European countries including France, Spain, UK and Italy the number of casualties and infected patients shot to thousands and millions. US have emerged as worst hit country where casualties have taken shape of bombshell.
In Pakistan the number of confirmed patients have been recorded 3800 and mortality rate is also lower as compared to European countries. So far 800 causalities have taken place all over the country. The main reason behind this low trajectory of infections and causalities is extremely inadequate testing facilities.
As per SOPs the hospitals are divided into 3 levels. Level one is meant for OPD, level two for emergency and level three for corona isolation. SOPs for all those working in hospitals have been set. In Pakistan PPEs facilities are being provided at level three but no training is imparted. PPEs are not being provided to doctors working at level one and level two. Particularly sweepers and other junior staff has not been provided surgical mask.
The hospitals where this protective equipment has been provided, training is not provided to the concerned staff to use them. Non awareness about use of equipment has turned the staff particularly lower staff into potential carrier of deadly Coronavirus.
They lower staff members have to roam from room to room and from bed to bed. No one can imagine if any sweeper and warden contract Coronavirus, he will spread this virus at what large scale when he returns home or goes to markets.
Even those who are working in isolation wards are not being subjected to coronavirus testing. They have to undergo necessary tests at private laboratories. Among certain other reasons, lack of training in use of PPEs among medical staff including doctors is claiming exposure of 70 percent paramedics to virus. Most of doctors and paramedical staff contract this virus while removing PPEs.
The doctors and paramedics are our front line soldiers in fight against killer Coronavirus pandemic. No soldier can fight without arms. Therefore, these soldiers should be armed with necessary protective equipment. Naming any hospital or ward in hospital after martyred doctors and paramedics is laudable but equipping these soldiers of front line with adequate protective equipment is the real job to be done.

Eradicating corruption from ministries

Eradicating corruption from ministries

Mounting financial and administrative irregularities, massive corruption and blatant violations of rules and regulations in almost all ministries and divisions are adding to the miseries of people besides tarnishing the image of government.
Like all ministries, Commerce Ministry has turned into home to corrupt elements. The corrupt officials and high ups are committing malpractices brazenly flouting PM Imran Khan’s directives.
In the wake of India’s annexation of occupied Kashmir, Indian forces’ atrocities against the innocent Kashmiris and inhuman lock down government snapped trade ties with India in August 2019. The imports of all the goods were banned.
The influential industrialists of Karachi threw this decision to winds. Owing to their unbridled influence and brutal prowess they got lifted ban on import of life saving medicines through lobbying among ministers. The cabinet issued decision on this count. It was said in clear terms in cabinet decision that only life saving medicines can be imported from India. The ministry of commerce which was running under the noted business tycoon Razzaq Dawood was to issue the respective notification. As soon as the notification was issued the business tycoons through frenzied buying imported raw material of 429 medicines including multivitamins, 52 manufactured medicines and 12 vaccines from India. Through this frenzied imports, they transferred billion of rupees to India.
They imported such medicines which did not fall in the ambit of life saving medicines and they are manufactured in Pakistan.
They persisted with this malpractice till March 2020. Meanwhile, the sources informed the PM Imran Khan about this horrendous scam.
PM called the report on this matter from health ministry. The report carrying stunning revelations was presented in the cabinet.
The PM directed Shahzad Akbar, special advisor on accountability to hold inquiry. It was disclosed during the inquiry that bigwigs of pharmaceutical industry did not let incorporate life saving drugs in ministry of commerce September 2019 notification as per cabinet decision.
The Health Ministry shifted the responsibility to ministry of commerce. The inquiry report will be presented before cabinet in next week. The high ups of pharmaceutical industry have also reached Islamabad and are on the way to lobbying among the higher circles to influence the report.
Before the presentation of this report to federal cabinet another irregularity has surfaced in ministry of health that it has obtained the approval for exporting hand sanitizers under certain odd conditions.
This approval foretells the inquiry report will meet what fate.
Massive appointments of officers have been made in over 16 federal ministries and divisions in defiance of rules and regulations. This way mammoth financial loss has been caused to national kitty.
One Imran Ahmad was appointed as Director General Petroleum Concession without the approval from the prime minister. Owing to his illegal and irregular appointment loss to the tune of over 50 million dollars was inflicted on national exchequer.
He was removed from his office on coming the matter into the notice of PM after 7 months.
Imran Ahmad ineptness and lack of qualification played havoc in another vital matter. He rejected a third party report worked out by two international companies and three high ranking officials including secretary petroleum Asad Ahya ud Din. This step led to cause heavy loss to national exchequer. How strange it is that he has been appointed as director technical petroleum concession when NAB has launched inquiry against him.
The sources said that he has been given this post at the behest of an influential person to hush up inquiry.
Another mega scam has surfaced up in Ministry of industries. A sum of Rs 140 billion were waived to fertilizers owners under Gas Infrastructure Development Cess. The governments withdrew this decision being raised by media.
The cabinet however directed that forensic audit of fertilizers owners be conducted before waiving this cess to them. The ministry of industries made this decision redundant by expunging these directives from final decision of the cabinet. Bid was made to print currency notes of denomination ranging from Rs 500, Rs 100 and Rs 5000 without security features and varnishing. The cabinet rejected it for fear of circulation of fake currency notes in the prevailing situation when process of distribution of over Rs 2oo billion is underway in the country.
Those behind these mega scams are so powerful that even FIA and NAB have failed to lay hands on them.
All these irregularities have come to the notice of PM and if he cannot change all the ministries, he should at least change these three ministries otherwise his claims of bringing change will lose their sheen.

Voice of the voiceless remains unheard

Voice of the voiceless remains unheard

They are killed without mercy and there is no one coming for their help; the voice of the voiceless continues to fall on deaf ears. Considered to be the third rate and third grade citizens of India, Kashmiris seem to have no future.
There is little light at the end of the tunnel which is the dwindling and diminishing ray of hope and millions believe that there will be new dawn. Many are living a life of fear with little hope, but that little hope shows that things will not be the same and the world will notice their plight.
The most recent global experience of lockdown has made the world realize, what it feels to be in quarantine and in self-arrest situation.
Kashmiris have paid a heavy price, they have lost thousands of lives, thousands are in jail and thousands are missing. There is no end to the saga that continues to date and there seems to be no immediate solution in sight.
The global lockdown has seen people witnessing how ‘humans’ act and react in the situation with few resorting to violence and snatching food from the others (stores in US getting robbed) and few leaving food for the others who have little or none (Turks leaving food packets on streets).
The protests of people in different countries owing to the lockdown made the global leaders realize that Kashmiris are right and Indian atrocities are uncalled for and unjustified.
These voices in the past were next to nil but now these voices are getting louder and louder making BJP run government curbing it with force and counter propaganda.
The ‘international powers’ particularly United Nations have always kept the issue pending for decades and has always been like finding a needle in the giant haystack.
United Nation is also criticized for not making India comply with the resolutions which have been passed in its assemblies years ago and have yet to bear fruit.
Generations have been lost and if UN doesn’t wake up now generation will be lost again.
The recent massacres by the Indian government have sent a panic waves in the minority, Muslim community that forms over 20 per cent of the Indian population.
Indian troops with the backing of the ruling party BJP hooligans have made life miserable for the people. The recent uproar in the BJP controlled India, is Muslims are behind the spread of Coronavirus. Eliminating Muslims will end Corona and there have been violence erupting in different areas of India.
The very thought has made BJP’s supporters going in mental frenzy breaking in to the homes of the Muslims that are living in shanty towns and ghettos.
A perpetual fear has gripped the Muslims and has made the saner elements in India reaching out for them disdaining at the ‘state policies’.
The recent voices for Kashmiris who have been in lockdown for nearly 300 days that makes two months short of year are now getting noticed, world understand how it is to live amid fear in the lockdown. The very experience globally has made people realize that Kashmiris are human and are facing tyranny by the Indian government.
Trump, in his visit to India in the newly constructed world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad,in February before Coronavirus gripping the world, raised his voice for Kashmiris and to this, Indian government reacted unpleasantly.
It may be noted here that Ahmedabad is a Muslim majority area and people there are facing a lot of hardships owing to state backed mobsters who gang up on Muslims.
The scenario in Ahmedabad is alarming as the state run offices have negligible presence of Muslims.
The atrocities and crimes against humanity by these state backed mobsters are never reported. The state control is so strong that nothing comes out and the voice of the voiceless Muslims carries no weight.

Do the rulers respect the Constitution?

Do the rulers respect the Constitution?

The military and civilian rulers both have introduced amendments in constitution through coercive means and with the complicity of each other to use it as a tool to serve their personal interests.
Most of the amendments were introduced by the governments to brow beat political rivals and perpetuate their rule.
The coercive, intimidating and bullying tactics were ruthlessly exercised by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who came to power following the dismemberment of Pakistan. He was a feudal lord and behaved with opposition like a feudal lord. This instinct remained intact with him and found reflection in all the dimensions of his national politics and the governance system.
During his stint certain amendments were introduced in the constitution soon after its passage. First two amendments were made regarding recognition of Bangladesh, former East Pakistan as an independent state and second amendment related to declaration of Qadianis as Non Muslim minority. These two amendments were passed peacefully.
The 3rd and 4th amendments were passed in the atmosphere of intimidation, bullying, thrashing and threats. These two amendments related to judiciary and freedom of expression. The opposition was a tiny one in the parliament comprising 15 to 20 members. They were opposed to these amendments and Bhutto wanted to get pass these amendments at every cost.
Owing to their dissention the opposition members were thrown outside the national assembly with the help of sergeant at arms on the orders of speaker Sahibzada Farooq Ali Khan.
The 3rd amendment was aimed at stifling the freedom of expression and trampling the fundamental rights.
It was binding on the government to present any political rival before the court after one month’s detention and this period of detention of one month was extended up to 3 months through article 10.
The government was bound to present his political rival before court four times during a 12 months detention in order to obtain further remand. Through another article, the period of detention was extended up to 24 months and later, it was extended for indefinite period.
Through 3rd constitutional amendment, Bhutto was authorized to impose emergency for indefinite period without seeking approval from both the houses of parliament.
He encroached upon the fundamental rights through this 3rd amendment despite the fact that he was facing no threat from opposition which was extremely small sized comprising below 20 members.
He was, too, confronting no opposition from media as a few journalists including Altaf Hussain Qureshi , Mujib ur Rehman Shami, Comrade Hussain Naqi and renowned intellectual editor Daily Dawn Altaf Gauhar on certain occasions targeted Bhutto’s government policies. They posed any real or potential threat to his government.
Third constitutional amendment was related to judiciary. Through this, amendment powers were taken from High Courts to grant bail to those detained under public safety act.
Under this amendment, the tribunal was constituted to try the National Awami Party (NAP) leaders in Hyderabad conspiracy case despite the fact that a democratic government was in place. The proceedings of this case were held inside Hyderabad jail.
Following the dissolution of their government, NAP leaders Khan Abdul Khan, Ghous Bakhsh Bezenjo and 52 others were in jail. The judges and attorney general had also conducted the proceedings in jail.
Following the passage of 3rd and 4th amendment, Bhutto meted out inhuman treatment to founding members of PPP including J.A. Rahim, Meraj Muhammad Khan, Talpur brothers, Mukhtar Rana, Ghulam Mustafa Khar and Hanif Ramay..
Bhutto also met the same fate at the hands of Gen (Rtd) Zia ul Haq. He was sentenced to death in murder case of Nawab Ahmad Khan and was executed.
During his military rule, Gen (Retd) Zia Ul Haq dubbed constitution as a rag of few pages. But he held general elections on non party bases in 1985 under this constitution. The parliament which was named as Majlis-e-Shoora represented all the political parties. By raising their hands they all nodded approval to the 8th amendment and all other unconstitutional and illegal moves of Gen Zia ul Haq including execution of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
The contradiction among the words and practices has always remained the basic feature of politicians and this emerged as more conspicuous during the tenures of Gen Zia ul Haq and Gen Pervez Musharraf. Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto blocked the way of 58(2), b through charter of democracy. But in 1999, Gen Pervez Musharraf sabotaged the amendments made during Nawaz Sharif and Benazir tenures. He overthrew Nawaz Sharif government.
How surprising it is that veteran politician like NawabZada Nasrullah supported Pervez Musharraf act.

Lust for power entails no good consequences

Lust for power entails no good consequences

Lust for power serves as intoxicant for the politicians and under the spell of intoxication politicians forget to make distinction between good and bad.
Pakistan’s political history is replete with the shameful incidents of grabbing power for the sake of lust. Almost all political leaders fell to lust of power and encroached upon the rights of rival politicians to form their governments. The so called democratic politicians have crossed all the limitations of good governance and acted instrumental in dethroning their rival politicians from the office of premiership or presidency through intrigues and conspiracies. Encashing the assassination of his spouse Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari won the general election. He held the slot of president of Pakistan. He was accepted as president of the country owing to killing of Benazir Bhutto in suicide attack.
Asif Zardari proved him no more different from the previous politicians in lust for grabbing power by hook and crook. He enjoyed an authoritative position in provinces and federal government after coming into power.
PPP had made government in the Centre and its Prime Minister was rightly on the driving seat in Islamabad. Sindh was power hub for PPP as it had brought PPP to corridors of power.
Presidency had become Asif Zardari’s occupancy. Baluchistan was also showing compliance of his orders. In KP he ruled in fact and ANP government was confined only to its name. He was not enjoying majority in Punjab, therefore, he could not form government in the province. Zardari could not tolerate the PML-N government in Punjab. He imposed governor rule rather than allowing the majority party to form the government. Zardari visited Punjab wearing turban and delivered speech in Punjabi to win the support from the people of Punjab. He forgot had governance been linked to language then Meraj Muhammad Khan would have been Prime Minister instead of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
Zardari, despite knowing that Punjab could not be run by him, committed mistake of clamping governor rule. Later he had to pay heavy price for this act.
President ‘s office is non political office but Asif Zardari being intoxicated with lust for power allowed the jialas to turn Aiwan-e-Sadr into hub of politics. The presidency always echoed and re-echoed with the slogans of Jaye Bhutto more than the slogans witnessed by Bilawal house in Karachi.
This all was not done for love of Bhutto but it all was demonstration of his lust for power. In Sindh PPP led government is facing the sword of governor rule hanging over their heads since formation of its government therein. Had PTI been strong enough in parliament, Murad Ali Shah government would have been shown the door long before. Despite its failure in delivering public goods to the people , PPP led government continues to enjoy rule in Sindh province. This was corona virus which has secured PPP government. Otherwise Murad Ali Shah would have been seen crying in Sindh assembly as an opposition leader. MQM is ally of PTI led government in centre but it is all eager to join PPP led Sindh government.
Grand Democratic Allience (GDA) sitting on the other side of the isle is also geared up to get its share in Sindh government. The GDA leadership does get active when some rumor about in-house change in Sindh assails its ears.
GDA has also been buoyed up to sail to corridor of power in Sindh after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has raised slogan to step in Sindh. PPP government foundations have been duly weakened by Asif Ali Zardari he strived desperately efforts to fortify outside front at the cost of inside PPP front.
Several jialas of PPP are not pleased with Sindh government. They are looking for opportunity to part their ways with the party since long but they have not switched their loyalties due to Asif Ali Zardari. PTI if wills so can pull down PPP government in Sindh at any time due to the fact that Sindhis will not come forward in support of PPP government due to its consistent failures.
Sindh government’s failure to deliver any good to the masses has not brought end to its governemnt.
People did not come to streets even when Asif Ali Zardari was arrested. PTI can pull down PPP government but it should keep in mind lust for power entails no good end.
