CDA, UNDP join hands for garbage disposal

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is launching a project under which the garbage will be divided into two parts from the source point.
As per detail, the initiative will be launched in Sector E-7, Margalla Retreat, Park Enclave and I-8 as pilot projects initially for three months. Under this project UNDP will provide two colours separate shopping bags in all the houses in these sectors for three months to separate dry and other garbage at source point. For this purpose 6 vehicles of Sanitation Department will be used. Segregated dry waste will be utilized after recycling.
Kitchen waste will be segregated and disposed of, while dry waste will be recycled by UNDP to make dustbins, park furniture and other items that CDA will install back in the same sectors.
The project initially covers the above areas and after experimental success, this project will be extended to other sectors of the city.
Approximately 700 tons of solid waste is collected and transported by the Sanitation Directorate of CDA from federal capital on daily basis.
Meanwhile, CDA has decided to replace the traditional sodium street lights already installed in Islamabad to European standard LEDs lights.
According to the details, the CDA administration will sign an agreement with the Government organization (NICOP) to install these new LEDs at 40 percent of the cost.
Under the agreement, conventional sodium street lights that run at 250 watts will run at 150 watts, while LEDs will have a 1,000-hour warranty. In addition, these LEDs can be switched on and off automatically.
The agreement will save billions of rupees in the installation of street lights in addition to significant energy savings. In addition the retrofit lights will meet modern requirements and will also be very easy to repair and can be manufactured at low cost.
It is to be noted that the government organization NICOP has expertise and experience in the field of retrofitting, therefore it has been decided to take benefit from these expertize. The agreement is being finalized.
