Staff Report

QUETTA: Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Azam Khan Swati has said that the railway department is on the verge of collapse and immediate steps will be taken to privatize the railways in Balochistan.
Business community should pay attention to the improvement of railway system in the province of the provincial government. They are ready to lease railway land, cash and others to the business community.
He expressed these views during his visit to Railway station Quetta on Thursday. He was accompanied on the occasion by Bari Barich, Member Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shafiq Afridi and others.
The condition of Quetta-Taftan railway track is unsatisfactory due to which the speed of freight train is 10 to 15 kmph. To achieve the targets, he demanded to run daily trains on Zahedan-Taftan 120 km railway track and said that it would guarantee development of import and export sectors.
He also complained that work on Quetta-Zhob section railway track is a matter of urgency which will facilitate access of goods and passengers from Balochistan to other provinces of the country. He also demanded renovation of Quetta railway station and facilities for passengers there. Mohammad Azam Khan Swati said that business community is the advocate of economy. For the betterment of economy and society it is necessary to provide facilities to businessmen. He said that the railway department has reached the brink of disaster. While 100 more wagons will also be supplied in Balochistan. We want to get rid of the outdated system of railways and build it on modern lines.
He said that this is not privatization. “30% of the people in the railways travel without tickets. Now we will not leave anyone behind,” he said. Quetta-Taftan section PC-1 is ready. Balochistan is getting Rs. 650 billion. I would say that the said amount should be spent on railways instead of roads. He said that our goods trains used to be better than Turkey, Iran and others but now they are ruined due to inattention.
He further said that Quetta-Chaman Passenger will also be privatized soon. He said that it is not in our power to fix freight. Now the agreement will be between the government and business community and not the railways.
